Painting: A before and after story

I don’t know if you know this about me, but I have zero home renovation experience (duh)… So, I’ve just about underestimated the time it takes to do almost anything since we started this project. I told myself and others that I’d move in by September, that we could paint the house in 5 days or less. Hahahahaha. Idiot.

What I learned is that painting is a GIGANTIC endeavour. I mean, I probably should have guessed as much but I was wearing some seriously optimistic rose-coloured glasses when we got started. Lucky for me, I have had incredible people pass in and out of my house to help me out in different ways.

In comes Krista

My dad has been a constant at PPH for the better part of this last year, but so was Krista from August through September. This chick painted my whole house herself (I was entirely useless, apart from minor tasks) and got to know any other contractors or tradespeople that came and went. She showed up day in and day out and you know what, she does a fantastic fucking job of it.

For all you inquiring minds, yes Krista does paint professionally as a side gig and maybe she would want to paint your walls, or a mural, or even create custom artwork for you, if you ask her nicely and pay her fairly (because seriously, painting = gigantic endeavour). Let me know if you want to be in touch with her — she will not let you down.

Back to the after

Since just over two months have passed from my last progress post, we’re going to do a little before and after from then to now. Things that have happened since the before photos you see below are:

  • mudding and taping of the drywall
  • priming and painting of ceiling and walls (Krista)
  • laminate flooring installation (apologies for the floor coverings)
  • electrical (including plates, pot lights, switches, etc.)
  • tiling of the bathrooms and entryway
  • baseboards and trim (installation by Rosario, and many hours in my parents’ garage painting by yours truly)
  • DAP and painting of the windows (Rosa – to be continued for doors, etc.)
  • installation of most of the interior doors as well as the back exterior door with that double deadbolt because this is Fort Knox (Rosario)

Note: Powder room not shown above. Check in later for a post on the outcome of the bathrooms and how closely they resemble my original plans.

Polly Pocket House is almost livable by Rosario’s standards, but as close as we are, there are SO many small details left to take care of. There are also some pretty big details left, like where is the kitchen? The front door? And the toilets? Why am I still peeing in a bucket? Will we ever get our weekends back? Questions I ask myself all the time.
